What Does The 1% For The Planet Commitment Mean For Natural Steps?

 Natural Step Bath Mats are a 1% for the planet brand which means that 1% of every sale goes to environmental charities. It’s a totally transparent way of brands pledging to support charities and allows consumers to know exactly what that commitment is.

Our super-absorbent bath mats have quite a lot in common with the major charity we support, 'Moors for the future'. How so?

Well, moorland is home to peat bogs and like our bath mats, peat bogs can hold a large volume of water, rather than using diamaceous earth like our mats, they do this with the help of a marvellous type of moss called Sphagnum.

Sphagnum mosses create an absorbent barrier on the ground that gives colour to our marshes, heaths and moors. Sphagnum moss stores water in their spongy structures, the moisture prevents the decay of dead plants which eventually allows peat to form.

Peat bogs cover just 3% of the worlds surface, yet hold nearly 30% of the soils carbon. Peat is capable of flourishing in the UK so our peat land is of global importance in the fight against climate change. There is a lot of talk about rainforests, which are of course very important but a square meter of peatland is actually a greater carbon store, yet little is said about their demise. The UK has lost 80% of its peatlands over the industrial age but Moors for the Future are fighting to restore them.

The work of moors to the future isn’t just about carbon, it also allows wildlife and beauty to flourish. Many species need peatlands to survive and are lost when the habitat dies. Restoration ensures rare plants and animals specifically adapted to live in boggy conditions can thrive.

Not only do Natural Steps make a financial contribution, we also get our welly’s and thermals on and head out in the depths of winter to plant Sphagnum. Last year we put over 3000 plants into the ground over 2 long but rewarding days.
